CUSHING - Marion Oakes Swears passed away peacefully at the Cushing Homestead, Saturday, March 18, 2017.

Born January 11, 1926, she grew up on Vinalhaven and attended Vinalhaven schools. Marion loved her life on the island.

She was a wonderful cook and loved attending her "coffee group" get togethers at local restaurants. She enjoyed spending winters at her second home in Florida with her husband Richard. Marion married Richard H. Swears Feb. 13, 1954. She raised her four sons on Vinalhaven. Marion had a love for animals and she could be seen most afternoons walking her dog.

Marion was predeceased by a son Raynold A. Young; a brother Sonny Oakes; and her parents. Marion is survived by her husband Richard Swears of Vinalhaven; her sons, James Young and his wife Lorraine of Vinalhaven; Richard (Ricky) Swears and his wife Jolene of Vinalhaven; John Swears and his wife Betsey of Vinalhaven; grandchildren Jimmy, Kathi, Elaine, Robert, Farrah, Renee, Johanna and Melissa., several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the Cushing Homestead for keeping Marion comfortable during these difficult years. A graveside service to be announced at a later date. Funeral arrangements are with Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home.
