Obituary for Fred Albert Verrill

Print
Fred A. Verrill, 89, of Rockland, Maine, passed away at home on March 13, 2017, after a period of declining health, with his loving wife of 63 years, Katherine, by his side.

Fred was born September 21, 1927 and grew up in Westbrook, Maine, where he graduated from high school in 1946. From there he went to Gorham State Teacher's College and graduated in 1951. His first year teaching was in Limestone, after which Fred spent the next 32 years teaching in Rockland before retiring in 1984. He obtained his Masters's from the University of Maine at Orono in 1965.

After retiring from teaching, he worked for the Knox County Credit Union; Fred also enjoyed baby-sitting for dear family friends, Sam Clement, Matt Clement, Sophia Buckley-Clement, Lilianna Clement, and Joon Clement, all of whom thought of him as “Papa.”

Upon arriving in Rockland, Fred rented a room at the home of Ray and Jane Foley. He was shown the room by the Foley's niece, Katherine Mullen. Clearly, it was love at first sight, as Fred and Katherine were married a year and half later on June 12, 1954. They purchased their home at 50 Masonic Street, on his birthday in 1961.

During his tenure in Rockland, Fred participated in many extracurricular activities, including coaching basketball and drama. Many of you may remember The Variety Show, which Fred directed for several years at the Junior High School. He also was a very active member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, where he served in a number of capacities, including being a lector for the Saturday evening Mass.

Predeceased by his parents, Philip and Mary Verrill, and two sisters, Mary Strachan and Ann Butrick, Fred is survived by his wife ‘Katie’; daughter Teresa Verrill; son Phil Verrill and his wife Margaret, all of Rockland; grandsons Ryan Verrill and his wife Torry of Warren, Mike Verrill and his significant other Nicole Clark; great-grandchildren Colby Verrill, Wyeth Verrill, Sada-Lynn Verrill, and Baines Verrill; nephew John Chester, nephew Mike Chester and his wife Kara and their children, Zachary and Meghan; niece Jeannette Fusaro, her husband John, and their children Jacob, Joseph, and Julia; niece Susan Chester, nephew Bill Strachan and niece Cathy Strachan.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 1, 2017 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 150 Broadway, Rockland. The Rev. Robert Vaillancourt will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Bernard Catholic Church, c/o St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, 7 Union Street, Camden, Maine 04843.
