Obituary for John Lloyd III

Print
CAMDEN – John Lloyd, III, 88, beloved husband for 64½ years of Janet M. Lloyd, died peacefully at home on Monday, March 13, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on February 27, 1929. He was the eldest son of John, Jr. and Lillian Lehmann Lloyd and is survived by his wife and six children; his brother, Lewis L. Lloyd and his wife Rosemary of MA and two sisters, Joan L. Jones of NH and Nancy J. Lloyd of Camden, ME; and a brother-in-law W. John Maguire and his wife Jane of CA.

John was educated in New Jersey schools, graduated from The Lawrenceville School in 1947 and was accepted at Dartmouth College. He deferred his admission after being selected by Lawrenceville as 1 of 2 graduates for the E.S.U. one-year exchange program at the Repton School, an independent school in Repton, England. His experience at Repton helped guide and shape his future career choice. He subsequently graduated from Dartmouth College in 1952, having majored in International Affairs, and entered the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. He and Janet M. Maguire of North Conway, NH, were married in November of 1952, and together spent the next 30 years travelling the world in the Diplomatic Service, he as an Economics Officer and Indonesian Language/South East Asia Specialist. During this time they welcomed six children into their family.

John’s family was the bedrock of his life: his wife Janet M. Lloyd, his four sons and their spouses, John W. and Shelley of CT, Christopher M. and Valerie of MD, David A. and Judy of the Philippines, Peter G. and Lynn of MD; his two daughters, Linda and her husband Pietro Paolo of CA and Jennifer Lloyd Mirabile and her husband Gerry of Rockport, ME, his 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Gregory, Caroline, Jeffrey, Robin (Drew), Alex (Dana), Sam, Maria, Nicholas, Amanda, Trevor (Rachel), and Zachary; plus three great-grandchildren, Noah, Claire and Ethan.

John’s last assignment was in the Department of State’s Bureau of Refugee Affairs, a subject to which he devoted the rest of his life, culminating in a second career with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva, Switzerland. In this position, John developed policy and training programs for the refugee programs of member states. His proudest achievement was creating the policy for both the U.S. Government and the IFRC that established counseling programs for female refugee rape victims.

Following retirement, John developed and taught courses in Refugee Affairs for the Iliad Program at Dartmouth College and the University of Southern New Hampshire. But his favorite occupation was planning annual family hiking trips in the White Mountains, where he “bagged” all but three of New Hampshire’s 48 ‘4000 footers’. His children and grandchildren greatly enjoyed these multi-day trips and overnights in various AMC huts.

After 20 years in New Hampshire, which both John and Janet called home, they moved to Camden, Maine, to be closer to their daughter, Jennifer. Immersing themselves in the community there, they enjoyed friendships at Quarry Hill where they resided, as well as Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, where they were parishioners.

John’s was a life well lived and he will be greatly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, March 20, 2017 at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden, Maine. The Reverend Robert Vaillancourt officiated. Interment will be held at a later date in North Conway, NH.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in John’s name to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
