ST. GEORGE – Shirley A. (Lehtinen) Hall, 85, beloved wife of True Hall, long time St. George resident, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Monday, January 30, 2017 at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in St. George, November 20, 1931, she was the daughter of Hugo, Sr. and Emma Stanley Lehtinen. Shirley attended local schools, graduating from St. George High School. Following graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, True Hall, on October 27, 1949 and their love and commitment deepened over their 67 years together. She and True made their home in St. George their entire married life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. George. She and her husband lived with his parents and two grandmothers through the birth of their first three children. It was during these early years of her marriage that Shirley learned from these caring women much of what would make her a wonderful mother and homemaker; from setting a table, to cooking, doing laundry, and being a hostess, all of which she passed onto her children.

Shirley was fiercely loyal to her children, always doing whatever she could to make sure they were happy and had a good childhood. Having everyone home for supper made her the happiest. Her home was also a second home to many in the neighborhood. She was very proud of her children and was thrilled when grandchildren joined the family.

During the early years of raising her family, she sold Avon, hosted the knitting club and assisted True by doing the bookkeeping for the laundromat. In her spare time, she knitted beautiful sweaters for all her children in complex snow flake patterns or fishermen’s knit.

Shirley loved to throw parties and host gatherings. Her children remember she would often pull out her cookbook in search of a new recipe to try for company. No matter what she tried, it was always delicious. She reveled in a good game of Charades, and once she and True learned to dance, Saturday night dances were a favorite pastime. Foxtrot was their favorite. She truly knew how to have a good time.

Shirley and True loved to travel, taking many trips abroad, and spending winters for many years in Sarasota, Florida. She loved living near the ocean and spent many summer months at their cottage in Tenants Harbor where Shirley could be seen swimming in the chilly ocean waters. She also enjoyed going up to camp for fishing trips to Sportsman’s Rest on East Carry Pond.

She was an avid reader, and loved to do crossword puzzles, regularly completing the New York Times Crossword with a pen. Shirley’s bright smile and positive attitude could light up a room, and she will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Predeceased by her brother Hugo Lehtinen, Jr., Shirley is survived by her husband, A. True Hall; her children,
Gerald ‘Jerry’ Hall and his wife Suzanne, Glenn Hall and his wife Cindy May, Sandra Hall and her husband Dan MacCaffray, Ron Hall and his wife Jane, Diane Hall, and Jenny Hall Maltais and her husband John Maltais all of St. George; her 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Connie Lehtinen of Tenants Harbor; and her niece Sally Lehtinen of Portland.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2017 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017. A reception will follow immediately at 104 Limerock, adjacent to the funeral home.
