Creating Havoc

I remember summers at Coopers Beach when my brother Dave and I would go with Bob around the beach gathering wood and building a raft to set on fire that evening and push it out into the water on fire. The Coast Guard used to come over in a 44 footer and make a couple circles around it and leave. About an hour later the whole thing exploded from one of Bob's strategically placed rattle cans (spray cans) or an empty propane cylinder that would  blow up scattering wood to be extinguished in the ocean. We never knew if he rowed out and placed it ithe raft after we left or if it was in th raft when it was pushed out but it made a report that usually drew he Coast Guard for another look. We could always hear it from our home a mile away. Other times we would just explore the woods and fields or the shoreline between what is now Shearmans Lane and Post Hill.
