PORT CLYDE - Jane Scarpino, 98, longtime resident of Port Clyde, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2016 at the Highlands in Topsham. She was born on January 13, 1918 in Mt. Vernon New York, the daughter of Karl E. and Doris (Brogan) Hoffmann. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1934, married H.C. “Skip” Scarpino, and raised her family in Mt. Vernon. Skip and Jane lived in Bermuda for several years while Skip set up an operations office for Mobil Oil. Skip retired in 1979 and he and Jane moved to Port Clyde, where they were active in the community, particularly in the restoration of the Marshall Point Lighthouse museum. Jane authored “Nellie the Lighthouse Dog”, a popular children’s book about Port Clyde and Marshall Point.

Jane belonged to the local art group and the poetry club, and enjoyed making fisherman dolls every year for the Port Clyde church fair. She loved working in her gardens, and visiting with friends from near and far. She also enjoyed her annual trips to Bermuda to house-sit for friends who would vacation off-island. She dearly loved all her dogs, from Irish setters to Rottweilers to her beloved Boston terriers.

Jane was predeceased by her husband Skip and a brother, William Hoffmann. She is survived by her four children, Jon Scarpino of Hawaii, Guy Scarpino (Judy Burtman) of Yarmouth, Karin Peterson (Carl) of Phippsburg and Christiane Scarpino of Ashburnham MA. She is also survived by a brother, Karl E. Hoffmann III (Joan) of Brewster NY; granddaughters Ruth, Miriam and Maile Scarpino; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Jane will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

At Jane’s request, no services will be held; her family will remember her privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Best Friends Animal Society, Kanab, Utah (https://bestfriends.org/donations) or the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, PO Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04341.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
