Wayne Henry  Smith
HOPE – Wayne Henry Smith, 74, went to be with his Lord, Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, after suffering a cardiac event the previous day.
Born in Rockland, January 21, 1942, he was the son of Melvin J. and Marian Hobbs Smith. While growing up on his family’s farm in Hope, he attended local schools and ultimately graduated from Camden High School.
On February 24, 1961, he married Lorraine Merrifield in Camden. In the mid-1960s, Wayne and Lorraine were pleased to purchase the farm, where they have resided all their married lives.
Wayne was first employed driving a grain truck for DeCoster Poultry. He later worked more than eight years driving truck and doing earth work with Roger LaChance. In 1973, he began his own excavation business, and in 1993 a retail sales and repair business of recreational vehicles, Smiths Sno & Grass Yamaha in Hope. During this same period, Wayne helped his wife in her business, Hobbs Farm & Greenery. In August of 2015, he began employment with Jake Barbour, Inc., where he was working at the time of his death.
Wayne loved snowmobiling and bought his first snowmobile in 1972. He was a member and past president of the Hatchet Mountain Sno-Riders in Hope. He also loved NASCAR racing and traveled to many races in other states.
Foremost in Wayne’s life was his family. He loved being involved in any family gatherings.
Other than his parents, Wayne was pre-deceased by twin infant daughters, Priscilla and Lucy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Lorraine; one son Everett Smith, Sr. and his wife Amy; one daughter Naomi S. Gagne and her husband William; one brother Ronald Smith all of Hope; five grandchildren, Jenica James and her husband Franklin of Skowhegan, Everett Smith, Jr. and Trevor Smith of Hope, Scott Marshall and his wife Tiffany of Swanville, Tristan Gagne of Hope; five great-grandchildren, Gage McIntyre, Cody McIntyre, Kristopher Boody, Brynley Marshall and Daxton Marshall, as well as many extended family members.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, October 27, 2016 at South Hope Community Church, 142 Main Street, Hope. A reception will follow in the Gymnasium. Interment will be private.
