UNION – On the evening of Sunday, October 2, 2016, Aaron C. Athearn, 41, of Union, passed away at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Born in Camden on March 28, 1975, Aaron was the son of Loren and Marilyn ‘Lyn’ Athearn. Educated locally, he was a 1994 graduate of Medomak Valley High School. Following graduation, he attended the University of Maine at Orono where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. During his time at UMO, Aaron was active on campus, and was a Founding Father of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After graduating, he continued as an advisor, sitting on the board for the fraternity.

Returning to his home town, Aaron joined his father in the family business, Athearn’s Vending Company. In 2008 the family sold the business to Pine State Trading Company in Augusta. Aaron remained with the company, and for the past couple of years was the General Manager of the Vending Division. Under his leadership the Vending team flourished and the business grew. Aaron not only had great relationships with his employees, but also with competing vending companies in Maine.

On January 8, 2000, Aaron married Shina Barrows. Together they brought two sons, Dominic and Vincent, into the world. He loved spending time with his boys. Hunting was a big part of life for the Athearn men. Aaron grew up hunting with his father, spending countless hours in the woods with him. Aaron and his father forged a special bond while spending time silently together in the woods. Their connection was strong, a unique bond between father and son, a bond he was thrilled to share with his own sons. Aaron taught his sons to hunt at a young age, setting up blinds for them because he knew they would not be able to sit still for long. In 2011, just a year after his father’s passing, Aaron was proud to have harvested a ‘once in a life-time buck’. Fittingly, he used his father’s Remington .270-caliber rifle.

Aaron was known for his outgoing personality, and he made friends easily with people from all walks of life. He was a great storyteller, often telling the same story more than once. He was always animated, and the stories grew a little ‘taller’ each time they were told.

An avid New England Patriots fan, Aaron never missed a game. If he wasn’t enjoying the game in Foxboro as a season ticket holder, he was at home cheering on his team in front of the TV.

More recently, after his marriage ended, Aaron reconnected with a high school friend, Mesina McComas. After spending many months talking on the phone, Mesina came to Maine for a visit and has stayed by Aaron’s side ever since.

Aaron’s passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of all who loved him. He will be sadly missed.

Predeceased by his father, Loren Athearn in 2010; Aaron is survived by his mother, Marilyn ‘Lyn’ Athearn and her companion Tim Burns of Union; his sisters, Michelle Athearn and her companion Stephen Haynes of Appleton; Erica Flagg and her husband Michael of Union; his brother Brian Athearn and his companion Nikki Mann of Concord, NH; his sons, Dominic and Vincent Athearn of Union and Warren; his companion Mesina McComas of Union, and her children Danica, Jordan and Braeden; two nieces, Hannah and Mia; as well as several aunts and uncles.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, social workers and clergy at Central Maine Medical Center for their exceptional and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, 529 College Savings Plans have been established for Aaron’s sons, Dominic and Vinny. For more information please email Lyn at Athearn529Plans@yahoo.com
