THOMASTON – Charlotte I. Stanley Konelick Monroe, 96, died Monday, June 20, 2016, at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born at Southwest Harbor, August 26, 1919, she was one of five children of William F. and Minnie A. Fernald Stanley. She grew up on Monhegan, where she attended schools through the ninth grade. At that time she moved to Manset and, while boarding with her aunt, attended and graduated in 1937 from Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor.

Having developed natural musical abilities at an early age, Charlotte played various instruments in the band and taught piano on Monhegan.

In earlier years, she worked at the Corner Gift Shop, MacDonald Drug Store, and J.B. Pearson Pant Factory, all in Thomaston.

She met her first husband Theodore S. Konelick, during World War II, when he visited Rockland while serving with the U.S. Navy. Following their marriage, the couple lived a brief time in New Bedford, MA. During that time, Charlotte taught piano at Perkins Institute for the Blind in Watertown.

Returning to Maine the couple settled in Thomaston, where one of the first people she met was Lucy Adams Mayo. That meeting produced a life-long friendship between the two women.

For more than 15 years, Charlotte worked as a Teller at Maine National Bank in Thomaston.
She was a long-time member of the Federated Church, where she was active with the Church Ladies, and was the oldest member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Grace Chapter, formerly in Thomaston. She served as a Ballot Clerk, enjoyed sewing, and found pleasure in ‘doing for others’. She loved neighborhood get-togethers.

Mr. Konelick died in 1965.

In the mid-1970s Charlotte married Richard E. Monroe, Sr. Richard had five children, Joanne, Fred, Richard, Jr., Charlie, Michael. Charlotte helped raise the youngest child, Michael.
Other than her parents and both husbands, Charlotte was pre-deceased by her siblings, Dwight, Abigail, Henry and Banes. She is survived by her daughter Theowanda K. Knowles and her husband Donald F. of Friendship; several nieces and nephews, Sherman N. Stanley and his wife Barbara of Monhegan, Virginia S. Crute and her husband Douglas of Owls Head, Enid S. Dana of Thomaston, Verlie Bowden of Yarmouth, Edward Walls and his wife Jessie of Bangor, Elaine Spurling of New Gloucester; as well as several cousins. She is also survived by Richard’s children and their spouses.

A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 28th, 2016, at Village Cemetery, Avenue 9, Erin Street, Thomaston. The Reverend Bob Dorr will officiate. A reception will follow at the Federated Church of Thomaston, 8 Hyler Street, Thomaston.
