Obituary for Ethel Marie Nystrom

Ethel Marie Nystrom
ROCKLAND - Ethel Rackliff Nystrom, 94, passed away peacefully, Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Knox Center for Long Term Care surrounded by her loving family.

Born August 4, 1921, she was the daughter of Walter and Gertrude Wall Rackliff. Educated in St. George schools, she was a 1939 graduate of St. George High School. She continued her education, attending Rockland School of Commerce. Upon completion of this school, she began her lifelong working career.

Ethel was first employed in the office at Sears and Roebuck. Here she met John Nystrom, and the two were married on June 16, 1956. Ethel next worked at MacPhail’s Appliance Store. She spent many happy years there until their closure. At that point, Ethel enrolled in a C.N.A. course and earned her certificate in 1977. She worked for many years at Coves Edge Nursing Home and later at Camden Healthcare. Employed well in to her late 80’s, Ethel finished her career at Manpower and even continued to volunteer her time at a local museum.

Ethel is remembered as a wonderful cook and baker. Her son often said she could have run a very successful bakery on her own. She loved to knit and crochet, making many beautiful afghans for family and friends.

Predeceased by her husband John in 1990, and a brother Harold Rackliff in 2010, Ethel is survived by her son, Dennis Darling and his wife Andrea of Spruce Head; a daughter Dianne Postupack of Owls Head; a sister-in-law Elsie Rackliff of Spruce Head; six grandchildren, David Postupack and his wife Wendy, Amy Polky and her husband Jeff, Ann Dorr and her husband Rene, Daniel Postupack, Tori Yattaw; Michael Wright; and seven great-grandchildren, Justin, Mariah, and Travis Postupack, Jacob and Aren Polky, and Coby and Sara Dorr.

At Ethel’s request, a graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 6, 2016 at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Creatures Veterinary Hospital, 881 West Street, Rockport, ME 04856.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
