Obituary for William W. Lannon

ROCKLAND - William W. Lannon, 74, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Friday, March 25, 2016 at Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Manhattan, New York, February 16, 1942, he was the son of John and Barbara Winlock Lannon. Growing up in New York City, Bill was a 1959 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy. Following high school, Bill earned a Bachelor’s Degree at Bowdoin College in 1963. He later completed his Master’s Degree at the University of Connecticut.

A dedicated teacher and professor throughout his entire career, Mr. Lannon began teaching at Rockland High School. He progressed through the professor ranks with Eastern Connecticut State University, ultimately serving as a tenured full professor. He retired after devoting 28 years to the English and Communications departments leaving behind many cherished colleagues and students. During his career he was instrumental in the founding and construction of the Harry Hope Theater, the cornerstone of the University’s fine arts program. Later, in retirement, he continued this dream, establishing the Outlore Theater Company. And, delivered theatre to the mid coast area.

He was an accomplished writer and a regular contributor to the Midcoast Review and numerous other periodicals. He authored four plays, two of which were produced off Broadway. He was a longtime patron of the arts and was deeply committed to the success of local businesses. Bill was a devoted patriot and loved spirited political debate.

Mr. Lannon is survived by his sons, David and his wife Vicenta, Kit and his wife Renee Comizio, Will and his wife Zsanett; his daughter Kristina O’Brien and her husband Geoffrey; longtime companion and friend Karen Lannon; Karen’s son Klayton Brewer and his wife Hilda; his brother James D. Lannon; sister Patricia J. Lannon; nieces and nephews, Stephanie F. Brown, Mallory M. Brown, Tucker R. Lannon and Bradford H. Lannon, and five grandchildren, Robert and Sophia Lannon, Liam, Lucas and Grace O’Brien.

A memorial service will be announced in mid-July. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the United Service Organization (USO) at www.uso.org/donate
