Norman E.  Meyer
WARREN - Norman E. Meyer, 70, passed away peacefully at his home, Tuesday, April 5, 2016, following an extended period of declining health.
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, June 28, 1945, he was the son of Bernard K. and Marjorie G. Elliott Meyer. He grew up in Palmer, Mass., where he attended local schools and was a graduate of Palmer High School, class of 1963. He then enlisted U. S. Navy Reserve, serving with the Navy two years.
He married Shirley E. Thresher at Palmer, May 11, 1968. The couple made their first home in Palmer, where they lived the first five years of their marriage.
They moved to Maine in 1973, when Norman began studies at Glen Cove Christian College, formerly in Rockport. While attending that institution, they bought a boarding home in Lincolnville, and operated that facility as Meyer’s Boarding Home four years. During this same period, Norman began in the Machinist Apprenticeship Program at Bath Iron Works. While on strike at BIW, with his wife, Norman ran Farmer’s Restaurant in Tenants Harbor. Two years later he returned to BIW, working as a Machinist/Designer until his retirement 2011 after 32 years with that company.
Norman and his wife, were founding 40 year members of Lakeview Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Rockport, where he served more than 30 years as a Deacon. He was a member of the Knox County Ham Radio Operators Club. Since the age of 14, he studied Astronomy and over the years has made many Telescopes. He constructed an observatory at his home.
He was an accomplished cook and enjoyed cooking for family get-togethers, always bringing more than requested. A Jack-of-all-Trades, he enjoyed working on his home, often painting and wallpapering whenever possible.
More than anything, Norman was devoted to his wife, family and grandchildren.
Besides his wife of 48 years, Shirley of Warren, Norman is survived by his daughter, Amy Sabins and her husband Gary of Union; two sons, Timothy Meyer and his wife Christine of Warren, Stephen Meyer and his companion Kathleen Kimmerly of Union; twelve grandchildren, Nicole, Brittney, Lynnette, Greg, Alyssa, Grace, Matthew, Kaylee, Justin, Jaycie, Nataleigh and Elliott; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth of Nebraska; two sisters Lois of Massachusetts and Carol of Tennessee, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 6:00 to 8:00, Monday evening, April 11, 2016 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M, Tuesday, April 12th at Lakeview Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 188 Rockland Street (Route 17), Rockport. The Reverend Stephen Tracey will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lakeview Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 188 Rockland Street, Rockport, ME or Coastal Christian Schools, 574 North Nobleboro Road, Waldoboro, ME 04572.
