Joan S.  White (Smith)
WARREN – Joan S. White, 89, died peacefully December 24, 2015 at home after living a long and active life.
Born in Rockland, March 30, 1926 to Capt. Dana and Carrie Russell Smith, Joan attended Warren schools and graduated from Westbrook Junior College in 1945.
On September 7, 1946 Joan married David W. White. Together they raised their three children on their poultry farm in Warren.
Joan started her secretarial career at Rockland District Junior High School. She later worked several years at Warren Telephone Company (now TDS), from which she retired. She returned to work at the Head Start program (now Penquis) in Rockland, until retiring yet again.
Always active in the community, she was a member and Deaconess of the Second Congregational Church in Warren. She contributed to all the church suppers and enjoyed singing in the chorus of the annual Riverside Club musicals.
As a life-member of the Order of Eastern Star, Ivy Chapter #16, she held the office of Worthy Matron many times. She also held the offices of Grand Chaplain and District Deputy Grand Matron, where she traveled the state with her friends Wes and Jini Woodman. Joan was a driving force in raising funds to have the Masonic Lodge in Warren built.
Joan was predeceased by her husband David, brothers Dana and Russell (Casey) Smith and sister Evelyn Solie. She is survived by her children, David and his wife Gayle of Warren, Bruce of Rockport, Rebecca White and her husband Robert Graham of Warren, her sister, Emily Beattie of Warren and Florida; grandchildren Stephanie White, Andrew White, Jennifer Winchenbach and her husband Aaron, Joshua White, Jeremy White, and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Sarah Winchenbach.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the Second Congregational Church, Warren. The Reverend Andrew Stinson will officiate.
