Obituary for Geneva Rose Pierce

Geneva Rose Pierce
CAMDEN - Geneva R. Pierce, 91, died peacefully, Sunday, November 1, 2015 at Quarry Hill Assisted Living in Camden.

Born in Friendship, March 13, 1924, she was the youngest of eight children born to Roscoe and Helen Cushman Simmons. Growing up in Friendship, she attended local schools, graduating from Thomaston High School in 1942.

Following high school, Geneva married Donald E. Pierce. Together they raised five children. While attending to the needs of her family, she also served as bookkeeper for her husband’s business.

After her marriage ended, Geneva joined the work force, working as a bookkeeper for ACE Ambulance and also with various State Agencies.
An accomplished writer, she worked as a correspondent for the Portland Press Herald and the Camden Herald. During this time she was asked to cover a story about ‘Andre the Seal’ in Rockport Harbor. This spawned ‘Andre’, the first book written about Harry Goodrich and his Rockport Harbor Seal; a book she wrote and published.

She was a hard worker her entire life, making Christmas wreaths for many years, as well as babysitting children in her home.

For many years, Geneva has resided with and enjoyed the company of Bernard Nelson. They were constant companions.

Predeceased by her companion Bernard Nelson; an infant daughter, Judith; and her daughter, Ruth Morton; Geneva is survived by her children, Patricia Steel and her husband Robert of Franklin, MA, Donna Barrows of Rockland, Allison ‘Skip’ Pierce and his wife Marjorie of Rockport, Donald ‘Biff’ Pierce and his wife Laurie of Owls Head; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

At Mrs. Pierce’s request, the family has chosen to remember her life privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Methodist Conference Home, 39 Summer Street, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
