CAMDEN – Carolyn T. Kelly, 91, died Sunday, November 1, 2015, at the Sussman House in Rockport following a long illness.
Born in Rangeley, she was the daughter of Charles R. Sr., and Charlotte Harris Tobie. She was a graduate of Trainer High School in Rangeley and later graduated from Presque Isle Normal School.
While in high school, one night while she was roller-skating at a local rink, a man sat on Carolyn’s popcorn. They struck-up a conversation, began courting and after her beau Earl K. Kelly returned from duty During WWII, they were married in New York City.
The couple made their first home in New Sweden before moving to Caribou. In Caribou, she operated her own business, The Canteen, a popular eatery in that community.
Their next move in association with her husband’s employment with the Maine Warden Service, was to Jackman. While there, the Kelly’s enjoyed the comradery of the Border Patrol families, often getting together to play, cribbage and cards. She loved canoeing, going to visit friends and family and watching the sunrise and sunsets.
Around 1960, the family moved to Camden, where Carolyn worked with the National Maine Coast Fisherman Newspaper until about 1985.
In her retirement, Carolyn enjoyed helping her husband garden, and was an active communicant of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden. She found great pleasure in her involvement with the Women’s Club, where she made many lasting friendships.
Carolyn was pre-deceased by her husband Earl in 2002, her son Jeffrey K. in 2000 and her sister Barbara Stillman. She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte K. Simon of Camden, Andrea E. Kelly of Rockland, Mary A. Kelly of Dorchester, MA; six grandchildren, Erica Simon and her husband Doug Gilkey, Ryan Kelly, Ashley Peters and his fiancée Lindsay Lenor, Sarah Kelly-Bedard and her wife Michelle, Andrew Kelly, William Kelly and his husband Victor; three great-grandchildren, Ellis Audrey Kelly, Elle Gilkey, Quinn Gilkey; a brother Charles R. Tobie, Jr. and his wife Fay of Hebron; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Monday, November 9, 2015, at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, November 10, from Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7 Union St., Camden. The Reverend Richard Malo will officiate. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Camden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Women’s Club Scholarship, Our lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7 Union Street, Camden, ME 04843.
