ST. GEORGE - Alice E. “Nanny” Estes, 92, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at the Knox Center in Rockland, Sunday, August 2, 2015. With the assistance of her family, Nanny enjoyed the independence of living in her own home until July of this year.
Born in Rockland, April 18, 1923, she was one of seven children of Frank A. and Elizabeth Hamilton Barton. Educated in local schools, she was a 1941 graduate of Rockland High School.
In earlier years she worked at Vinal’s Maternity Hospital, which was owned by her mother. While working there, she earned certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
March 29, 1941, she married Edward Leslie Estes in Rockland.
After moving to Connecticut with her husband, she devoted much of her time to raising her 5 children. During that same time, she worked the night shift in the maternity wards at Stamford Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital, both in Stamford.
Returning to Mid-Coast Maine, she served as Nanny for the Chartrand family in Rockland and Griffith family in Thomaston.
She was a member and twice served as President of the Rockland Lodge of Elks Emblem Club. A longtime active member of the First Baptist Church of St. George, she served several years as Church Clerk. Nanny was noted as a wonderful cook and enjoyed collecting angels. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Other than her parents, Nanny was pre-deceased by one son, Robert Paul Estes in 1999 and her beloved husband Edward in 2005. She is survived by two sons, Donald Estes of St. George, Leslie ‘Buzz’ Estes and his wife Sandra of Norwalk, CT; two daughters, Linda Estes and her spouse Dorothy Monteleone of Wilton, CT, Deanna Ripley and her husband Fred of Owls Head; 17 grandchildren, Tammy Ripley (d. 1974), Fred ‘Skip’, Ripley, Jr., Edward Ripley, Matthew Ripley, Renee Hall, Elena Fontana (d. 2004), Kim Estes, Ann Milot, Todd L. Estes, Christy Bucci, T.J. Estes Groth, Dawn Lynch, Angel Pia, Glory Lyn Estes (d. 1970), Jason Estes, Paul Estes, Michael Estes; many great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives and are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, August 6, 2015, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. A Celebration of ‘Nannie’s’ Life, will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, at the First Baptist Church of St. George at Wiley’s Corner. The Reverend Walden Chandler will officiate.
