ROCKLAND, MAINE - Richard G. Neville, 85, formerly of Mooresville, NC, and Endicott, NY, died peacefully with his son at his side, Monday, March 2, 2015 Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland. A few months after the death of his wife, Audrey, Richard moved to Rockland, Maine to live close to his son and his family.

Born February 12, 1930, he was the son of William and Hazel Gibbs Neville. Growing up in Niantic, Connecticut, he attended grade school there, and graduated from the Bulkeley School in New London, CT. Following high school, Mr. Neville enrolled in Purdue University where, in 1951, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics.

While he was in college, Mr. Neville worked summers at Rocky Neck State Park. Here he met the love of his life, Audrey Warner, who was camping with her family. The two were married in April of 1953, and continued to camp at Rocky Neck with their extended families, spending many wonderful summers there.

Mr. Neville began his working career as a civilian employee for the U.S. Navy in Newport, Rhode Island, working as a scientist, degaussing ships. Working there until the mid-1950s, he moved with his family to Poughkeepsie, New York where he began his long time career with IBM. He later transferred to an IBM research laboratory in Endicott. Mr. Neville was very proud to be a member of the ‘Quarter Century Club’ for 14 years. Late in his career he transferred to Charlotte, NC where he assisted in the establishment of a research laboratory there. Even after retiring in the mid-1990s he continued with IBM, working as a consultant. Throughout his career, he was the inventor of, and held many patents for inventions, especially in the banking industry.

When he wasn’t working Mr. Neville loved to be on the water. Sailing was his passion and he took great pleasure in racing small sailboats. Together with his son as his crew, they participated in National, North American, and World Championship Regattas. After retirement, for many years he continued racing San Jaun 21’s with his wife.

He was a founder and charter member of the Oquaga Lake Sailing Club in New York and a member of the Lake Norman Yacht Club in Mooresville, NC. Mr. Neville was also a very active member of the Lake Norman Lions Club.

Predeceased by his wife, Audrey Warner Neville, a sister Barbara Kornreich and a brother William Neville; Mr. Neville is survived by his son, Gary Neville and his wife Elaine of Lincolnville; his daughter Karen Neville and her partner Louis Petrovsky of Endicott, NY; a brother John Neville; a sister Frances McGrath; three grandchildren, Nathan Neville and his wife Elizabeth, Rebecca Neville, and Claire Neville; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Brooklyn, and Nolan; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Neville’s family has chosen to remember his life privately at this time with a gathering planned for this summer at Rocky Neck State Park.
