Born October 17, 1935, in East Boothbay, she was one of ten children born to Frederic Carlos, Sr. and Hazel Farnham McKown. She was a 1954 graduate of Boothbay Region High School. Shortly after graduating high school she married Leroy Montgomery Morey and moved to Rockland. They were married 55 years at the time of Leroy’s death.
Laurie worked in many local businesses as a bookkeeper and secretary. She was an avid seamstress and quilter; she leaves behind a legacy of her creations. For many years she resided in Cushing, where she was a long time active member of The Broad Cove Church.
Our mother has left us with a lifetime of memories and will be greatly missed by her children and family. She was the best mother and provided us a happy childhood. Mom and Dad enjoyed many things together including scuba diving, motorcycling, traveling, roller skating, boating, and hosting many family events. She was kind, giving and helpful to her friends.
Other than her parents Laurie is pre-deceased by her in-laws Montgomery and Joyce Blood Morey; brothers, Frederic C. McKown, Jr., Robert A. McKown, David McKown; and a sister Marilyn Collins. She leaves behind a daughter, Susan Martin of Cushing; a son, Mark Morey of Rockland; a brother George (Bink) McKown and his wife Susan of Thomaston; four sisters, Barbara Dewey of California, Martha McKown of East Boothbay, Joyce Graffam of Thomaston, Marjorie Yokum and her husband William of Lady Lake, Florida, a grandson, Jesse Eaton and his wife Erica of Richmond, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Linda Benway of Westbrook; as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be no service, burial will take place in the spring at Pleasant View Cemetery, Cushing.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her honor to Maine Alzheimer’s Association, 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
