Obituary for Virginia Marie Jonasson

Virginia Marie Jonasson
ROCKLAND - Virginia M. Jonasson, 92, died peacefully at her home, Wednesday, January 21, 2015, with her family at her side.

Born in Rockland, March 17, 1922, she was the daughter of Gaspare and Maria Costella Accardi. Educated locally she was a 1940 graduate of Rockland High School. For nearly 13 years Mrs. Jonasson was employed with Van Baalen’s as a Floor Lady, later working for a few years at National Sea Products.

On August 30, 1947, Virginia married Carl F. Jonasson in Rockland. Together they resided in Rockland until moving to Owls Head. The Jonasson’s resided there for many years where they enjoyed time with friends. Mrs. Jonasson was also a devoted mother, spending her time caring for her son as he was growing up.

Following Mr. Jonasson’s retirement the couple spent their winters in Port Richie, Florida, while enjoying summers at their home on Sennebec Lake in Appleton. Camping was a favorite pastime.

Growing up in a large Italian family, Virginia became an excellent cook. Her son remembers the wonderful meals she loved to prepare for friends and family alike. Family was very important to her, and she held a special place in her heart for her granddaughter and her godchildren.

Most recently Virginia has resided in her own home built for her by her son and daughter-in-law. A home that allowed her independence, yet the closeness of family just on the other side of the door. Her family was grateful to the caring staff of Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice who assisted them in Virginia’s last days. Her daughter-in-law, Bonni said she was especially thankful for the love and attention of two special caregivers, Iris Perkins Powell and William Robbins, Jr. without whom Virginia would not have been able to spend the last two years in her own home surrounded by love and family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Predeceased by her husband Carl in 2001; her brothers, Stephen Accardi, James Accardi and Anthony Shoecraft; two sisters, Josephine Palma, Antoinette LaVerda; Viriginia is survived by her son, Stephen Jonasson and his wife and Virginia’s primary caregiver, Bonni of Rockland; her granddaughter Chloe Jonasson of Rockland; her godchildren, Nancy Vannah, Robert Bird, Kathy Hall, Christine Rocchio; as well as several nieces, nephews and close friends.

Mrs. Jonasson will be laid to rest privately beside her husband at Coughlin Memorial Cemetery in the spring.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
