Obituary for Kim Eileen Libby

Kim Eileen Libby
PORT CLYDE – Kimberly E. ‘Kim’ Libby, 60, died unexpectedly following a very brief illness, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Her loving family was at her side.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kim was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Mize Coulter. Raised in Cincinnati by her mother and step-father Lawrence Wood, Sr., Kim was graduate of Cincinnati High School. Later in life she earned an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts from University of Maine at Augusta.

Kim has been a mover and shaker her entire life. As a young woman she moved to Maine in 1980, and has been making her mark here ever since. She has held several vocations over the years, most notably as a homemaker and mother. She also filled her need for social interaction when she ran the Port Clyde Post Office. Most recently she has been working as a care giver with the Break of Day Mental Health Group. Her husband remembers Kim as a ‘fixer’. She was always trying to help others. For as long as he can remember she has opened her heart, her arms and her home, taking in any and all aging parents and family members who might need care.

On August 20, 1994, Kim married her best friend and soul-mate, Gary Libby. Together they have made their home in Port Clyde. Recently they have enjoyed cultivating their land, establishing a farm where she was able to raise pigs, grow gardens and live an ‘off the grid’ lifestyle. Kim and Gary were happy together no matter what they were doing, whether it was traveling the globe, sitting at home with a good book, or deep in conversation, what mattered most to them was being together.

Kim had an incredible sense of humor as well as an out-going and out-spoken personality. You never had to wonder what was on Kim’s mind. She told it like it was and spoke her mind whenever she felt it necessary. She was passionate about the causes she believed in, and wasn’t afraid to tackle big political issues. She was civic minded, always taking time to educate herself and vote; and she loved participating in her community. Kim was always trying to make the world a better place.

An accomplished artist, whatever Kim touched, she made beautiful. She was a skilled photographer, and painter. She loved working with stained glass, making mosaics, and at one time worked in Chicago taking imperfections out of portraits.

Kim’s number one priority in life was her family, mainly her children. She was a fiercely loyal mother, always making sure she was there for her children. Whether it was a scraped knee or a big life accomplishment, she felt it was her duty to be by their side. Kim also held a special place in her heart for her four-legged babies, her two dogs, ‘Red and Midnight’ and her cat ‘Speck’.

Kim’s untimely passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of all she touched.

Predeceased by her father, mother and step-father, as well as a son Jason Lee Morris; Kim is survived by her beloved husband Gary Libby of Port Clyde; her children, Kristopher H. Coulter and his wife Oramae of Tenants Harbor, Kari Rolsen and her husband Joe Harris of Owls Head, Daniel A. Sullivan and his companion Shelby Turner of Tenants Harbor; Leslie Turner and her husband Roger of St. George; six grandchildren, Cerra Harris, Brennan Harris, Olivia Turner, Benjamin Colulter, Adreanna Coulter, Quincy McLauglin; 2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence ‘Larry’ Wood, Jr. of Rockland; and three sisters, Jennifer Brierly and her husband Michael of Ohio, Barbara Wood of Kentucky, Heather Lyons and her husband Louie of Ohio.

A gathering for friends and family will be from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Black Harpoon in Port Clyde.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests helping fulfill Kim’s dream of seeing her grandson involved in a People to People trip by donating to the People to People Donation Fund for Brennan Harris, c/o Machias Savings Bank, Three Glen Street, Rockland, Maine 04841.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
