Obituary for George Mahlon Myers Sr.

ROCKLAND - George M. Myers, Sr., 83, died unexpectedly, Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
Born in Old Town, January 28, 1931, he was the son of Augustus J. and Josephine Nash Myers. Educated in local schools he moved to Rockland with his family at age 13. Later in life he earned a high school diploma.
He married Euretta E. Flagg in Rockland, January 17, 1948. Other than during George’s time in the military, the couple made their home in Rockland all their married lives.
July 9, 1954, he entered the U.S. Army, serving primarily with the Engineering Depot Company in Seattle, WA. His last duty was at Fort Richardson, Alaska. George often recounted that upon his discharge from the military in 1956, he traveled with his family across frozen tundra and vast country on their trip back to Maine.
Having trained as Certified Welder during his military service, George worked with several local metal fabricators throughout his career. In conjunction with that, he owned and operated George Myers, Sr. Welding, a trade he taught and passed on to his sons and grandsons.
He loved animals and took in many stray pets over the years. He was particularly fond of his present pet and constant companion, a Shiranian named ‘Tippy’.
Besides his wife of almost 67 years, Euretta, George is survived by two sons and their wives, George M. Jr. and Elaine Myers of Rockport, John F. and Edith Myers of Spruce Head; two daughters, Gloria M. Britto, Betty C. Davis and her husband Steven, Sr. all of Rockland; a brother, Philip Myers of Thomaston, nine grandchildren, Sonya Myers, Kala French, Whitney Myers, Jess Wagner, Steve ‘Bub’ Davis, Jr., Johnny Myers, Melissa Myers, Jacob Myers, Shane Hatch; seven great-grandchildren, Casey and Anna Wagner, Ashley Deabler, Dustin Cote, Austin and Kameron French, Jenna Mae Davis; one great-great granddaughter Layla Burns; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering with military honors will be announced this summer. Because of George’s lifelong compassion to stray animals, donations are suggested to the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
