Athene Ruth Anthony
VINALHAVEN - Athene R. Anthony, 97, passed away Friday, October 10, 2014 in Saco.

She was the daughter of Dr. Ralph and Florence Thompson. She was brought up on the island until she was a teenager; at that time the family moved to Boston after the quarrying business declined, remaining there for a few years.

She graduated from Girls Latin School in Boston in 1938 and from Framingham Teachers College in 1939. In 1951 she received her Master of Education degree from Boston University.

Her first teaching job was in a remote, rural school on the Canadian border; school has one room and 28 pupils in every grade - one through eight. She later taught in Presque Isle, Houlton, York, and twenty-six years in Portland. She was also a Critic teacher for the University of Maine in Gorham for eight years.

She married the Reverend Michael Anthony in 1942. In 1977 they retired and moved back to the island and lived in the same house where Athene grew up.

In 1979 she wrote “Vinalhaven Reminiscences”, a collection of the reminiscences of over thirty of the oldest people on the island. She was a member of the ‘Wind’ staff for over 20 years, past President of the American Legion Auxiliary, former Secretary of the Extension, former Secretary of the Historical Society, member of the Order of the Eastern Star and treasurer of St. Timothy’s Church.

Athene was predeceased by her sister, Martha Thompson, and is survived by her daughter, Rosemary.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Cummings Cemetery, Vinalhaven, followed by a celebration of her life in the Vestry of Union Church.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
