Obituary for Sarah E. Doubleday

Sarah E. Doubleday
HOPE - Sarah Doubleday died on September 2, 2014, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was the loving and dearly loved daughter of Mary Jane and David Doubleday and sister of Peter Doubleday of Hope, granddaughter of James (deceased) and Essie Sherman of Belfast.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours Sunday, September 7, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Burpee, Carpenter, and Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A private funeral is planned.

Sarah was proud of growing up in Hope, surrounded by hay and blueberry fields, ponds and woods, coastal mountains and apple orchards. She loved telling her friends from away about living in a community of retired circus elephants, an antique fire-engine restorer, a bagpipe maker, a cobbler, a blacksmith, cabinetmakers, printmakers, photographers, and apple growers. A true philologist, Sarah loved words in all forms of expression. An avid and articulate reader, writer, listener, and speaker, Sarah enjoyed engaging others in conversation and repartee. She always seemed to express the right words. A dedicated, life-long athlete, Sarah swam with the Pen Bay YMCA Sailfish teams, played on soccer and basketball teams at the Hope School, was a four-year, three-season member of the soccer, swim, and lacrosse teams and athlete of the year her senior year at Camden Hills Regional High School. More recently, Sarah competed in road races, completed half and full marathons, and was training for her second Portland marathon.

Sarah was a graduate of Hope School, Camden Hills Regional High School, the University of Vermont, and Brown University. She was excited about beginning her teaching career as a history teacher at Morse High School. She looked forward to sharing her love of learning with so many young people in the greater Bath community.

Sarah leaves behind many friends and a large extended family. She loved them all very much.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sarah’s name to Hope Elephants at http://hopeelephants.org/donate/.
