Obituary for Virginia Christine Wall

Virginia Christine Wall
TENANTS HARBOR - Virginia C. Wall. 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Born in St. George, September 1, 1922, she was the daughter of James Rodney and Emma Coltart Kinney. Educated locally she was a 1941 graduate of St. George High School.

Following high school, Virginia married Merrill B. Wall at Clark Island. As a young woman, Virginia moved from Spruce Head to Tenants Harbor where she worked for the Aldrich family. She later began working with the Wathan family. After the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Wathan, she continued her employment with their daughter and her husband, Viola and Fred Sheehan. Her dedication and friendship has led them to consider Virginia part of their extended family.

Later in life and for over 17 years, Virginia worked at Halls Market in Tenants Harbor. She was a fixture there, known for her warm smile, great hugs and lively conversation. She was known and remembered by residences and visitors from across the country alike.

Virginia was an accomplished knitter and has left her mark on the entire community. She has made thousands of dish cloths that have been given as gifts and have made their way across the US. She became the ‘go-to’ woman for knit hauling mittens for local fisherman. She also made many beautiful knit vests and afghans, many of which she donated for local fundraisers and auctions. Her family said there was not a household in her neighborhood that was not blessed with several pairs of slipper socks and mittens, and she would help with alterations for anyone who stopped and asked.

More than anything, Virginia loved her family. She looked forward to visitors, especially from her son and daughter and their spouses. She had an uplifting spirit and greatly enjoyed just sitting and talking, telling stories and giving her famous hugs. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Predeceased by her husband in 1997; four brothers, James, Charles, Austin, and Arthur Kinney; and a granddaughter Pamela; Virginia is survived by her son Richard Wall and his wife Malta Lee Phelps of Tenants Harbor; her daughter Marsha Rome and her husband Scottie of Port Clyde; a brother Alfred Kinney and his wife Pearl of Reno, NV; three sisters, Louise Ervin of St. George, Elosia Hupper of Tenants Harbor, Alice Frye and her husband Don of Rockport; sisters-in-law, Louise Kinney of Spruce Head, Corinne Kinney of Rockland; seven grandchildren, Paula, Julia, Nick, Stacey, Michael, Lyle, Darci ; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, August 15, 2014 at Seaside Cemetery in Tenants Harbor. Pastor Bill Hickey will officiate. Virginia’s family would greatly appreciate hearing stories and memories from you either at the service, or on her Book of Memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests, donations in Virginia’s name may be made to the St. George Firefighters and Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, Maine 04860.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
