HAMPDEN & AUGUSTA – Malcolm Henry ‘Mac’ Ingraham, 89, died peacefully, Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Ross Manor in Bangor.

Born in Nobleboro, November 22, 1923, he was the son of Frank C. and Louise Hussey Ingraham. Raised in Owls Head, he was a graduate of Rockland High School.

Following high school, Mac worked for a brief time for Todd-Bath Shipbuilding in South Portland. During World War II he enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the Seabees. As a member of the 1017 CB Detachment, he was stationed in Oran, Algeria at the U.S. Naval Supply Depot.

After being honorably discharged, Mac began his career with Central Maine Power Company as a 1st Class Lineman. He was subsequently promoted to Assistant to the Director of Safety, later becoming Director of Safety. Mac continued to work his way up, retiring as Manager of Industrial Relations, after 39 years with the company.

Following his retirement, Mac worked for several years as a volunteer at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was also a 50 year member of the American Legion and the Masons.

On July 19, 1958, Mac married the love of his life, Naomi Vaughan Withington in Glen Cove. Together they made their home in Gardiner and Augusta. Mac and Naomi had a great group of friends and loved to entertain. They were known as the ultimate host and hostess. Over the years the couple also took great pleasure in sailing. His family said Mr. Ingraham adored his wife and was very devoted to her. Mrs. Ingraham passed away on April 18, 2003.

Mac is remembered by his nieces as a man of incredible honor, integrity, patience and wisdom. They said he never spoke before thinking it through. He was also thought of as a very devoted, wonderful son, who drove from Augusta to Owls Head every day after work to visit his mother when he was a young man.
An avid hunter his whole life, for many years Mac took great pleasure in an annual hunting trip with several close friends to his hunting camp in Cooper. Many of these same friends were members of a weekly ‘breakfast group’ that met at various local restaurants. One member recalls, the group persevered through the closing of four restaurants, moving to the next one each time.

Mac was a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ and could fix anything. He loved helping others, and if he didn’t know how to fix something, he would read about it and learn. Mac was proud of his keen mind that he felt he kept sharp with a daily crossword puzzle. His niece said because he enjoyed a challenge, she would give him a Mensa Crossword book every Christmas.

He was predeceased by his sister, Norma Rose in 1930, and his wife, Naomi in 2003. Although Mr. Ingraham leaves no living blood relatives, he will be deeply missed by one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law; as well as several nieces and nephews. He will be especially missed by his Maine nieces and nephew who have been blessed to have him as their second father, Brenda Wickware of Bangor, Karen DiSalvatore and her husband Colombo of Manchester, CT, Mary Jo Freeman of Glenburn, Bruce Withington of Bangor. He has been a constant source of immeasurable love and guidance throughout their lives. He was also loved and admired by many great-nieces and great-nephews as well as ten great-great-nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, where a celebration of his life will be held at 2:00. The Reverend Rex Garrett will officiate. A reception will follow at 104 Limerock, the funeral home’s reception facility. Private interment will be in Achorn Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that in keeping with Mac’s generosity and kindness everyone ‘pay it forward’ and carry out an act of kindness to someone who might need it.
